Math that lines up with Common Core

Most US states teach math to Common Core or to standards built on it. The standards set a clear path by grade: multiplication and fractions in grade 3, multi-digit arithmetic and decimals in grades 4 and 5, then ratios, expressions and equations as middle school begins.

Our math courses are matched to your child’s grade and framework, so the lesson your fourth grader sees is fourth-grade content, using the words their school uses. When they bring a question from homework, it fits naturally into the class.

Each course runs two classes a week. A lesson opens with a quick warm-up on something from earlier, introduces one new idea with worked examples, then gives every learner problems to try while the teacher watches how they work.

What four learners change

Split thirty ways, an hour of a teacher’s attention is about ninety seconds per child. With four, each child gets a real share: time to explain a method, have a mistake caught at the exact step it happened, and try again straight away.

Small groups also suit the child who has gone quiet in class. There is no back row, and the teacher knows every learner by name from the first lesson.

If your child would do better alone, whether they are racing ahead, well behind, or anxious in front of peers, every math course can be taken one to one instead.

Signs it is time for a tutor

A child falling behind in math rarely fails outright at first. You see homework that drags, “I’m just bad at math”, or a teacher note about gaps in the basics. Those gaps usually opened a grade or two before anyone noticed.

A $1 first class is a low-stakes way to check. Your child works on problems at their level with the teacher, you can watch, and you will know within the hour whether the fit is right.

Where children most often get stuck

Grade 3 and 4 is where multiplication facts and the meaning of fractions have to become solid. A child who is still counting on fingers for 7 × 8 spends their working memory on arithmetic and has none left for the new idea.

Grades 5 and 6 bring fraction and decimal operations, then ratios and percentages. These are the topics most likely to feel like a wall, because each one assumes the last. Grades 7 and 8 add negative numbers, expressions and equations, where a small gap in number sense shows up as a stream of sign errors.

In a small class the teacher finds which of these is the real gap, often a grade or two below where the child is working now, and fixes that first.

How booking works

Every class is a live, 60-minute video lesson with a real teacher. Group classes take four learners at most, and the booking system will not sell a fifth seat. If you would rather your child had the teacher to themselves, every maths and coding course is also available one to one.

A group class is $11 and a one-to-one class is $16, priced per class. You can pay class by class or book the whole course. Your family’s very first class costs $1, once per family, so you can see the teacher and the format before committing to anything.

Class times are shown in your own time zone when you book. If something comes up, you can move or cancel a class up to 24 hours before it starts. There is no subscription, so nothing renews in the background, and you are welcome to sit in on any lesson.
