How to actually help your child with algebra
Algebra is where a lot of parents stop being able to help. Up to that point, most school maths is checkable by eye; algebra introduces letters standing in for numbers, and the working matters as much as the answer. This guide starts with what to do tonight, then explains why it works.

Run the two-question check
Write "3 − 2 × 4" and "−5 + 8" and ask your child to solve each one out loud. The answers are −5 and 3. Hesitation or a different answer tells you where the real gap is: the order of operations, or negative numbers.
Ask, don’t tell
Try "What is this question asking you to find?" and "What did you do in this line?" Keep the pencil in your child’s hand. Talking through their own working is usually where the mistake shows itself.
Find the first line that breaks
Don’t start the page again. Read the working one line at a time until a step stops making sense, and fix only that step. A child who redoes every page after a mistake stops trusting their own working.
Check the answer by putting it back
Once your child has a value for x, put it back into the original equation. If both sides match, it is right. A child who learns this stops needing you to mark their work.
Why algebra feels like a wall
Up to algebra, most maths is arithmetic on numbers a child can picture: seven apples, half a pizza. Algebra asks a child to reason about a number they do not know yet, using letters, and to trust a chain of steps even when the answer is not obvious until the end. That is a genuine jump in abstraction, not a sign anything has gone wrong.
It also changes what "showing your work" means. In arithmetic a wrong answer is easy to spot; in algebra a single sign error three lines up can make an otherwise correct method fail, so the working has to be checked line by line rather than judged by the final number.
Why the gap is usually older than algebra
Algebra rests on three earlier skills: fractions, negative numbers and the order of operations. A child who is unsure whether to add or multiply first, or who loses track of a minus sign, will struggle with every algebra topic you put in front of them, because algebra uses those skills on every line.
That is why reteaching algebra rarely works on its own. It adds a second problem on top of the first. Ten minutes fixing negative numbers often does more for algebra homework than an hour on the algebra itself.
What a good explanation looks like
Take 3x + 5 = 20. The goal is to get x on its own, doing the same thing to both sides each time. Take 5 from both sides: 3x = 15. Divide both sides by 3: x = 5. Then check: 3 × 5 + 5 = 20. Said out loud like that, every step has a reason.
The most common mistake here is adding 5 instead of taking it away, which gives 3x = 25. If your child does that, don’t correct the answer. Ask why they chose to add. Usually they have learned "move it to the other side" as a rule without the reason, and the fix is the phrase "do the same thing to both sides".
Signs it’s time for outside help
When home help has done what it can
- The same kind of mistake comes back after three or four explanations.
- Homework regularly ends in tears or refusal.
- Your child says "I don’t get maths", not "I don’t get this one thing".
- You are relearning the topic from a textbook and still cannot explain it clearly.
- Tests go worse than homework, because at home someone was prompting the steps.

What age do children usually start algebra?
Most start formal algebra between about 11 and 13 (grades 6 to 8 in the US, Years 7 and 8 in the UK and Australia), though simple "find the missing number" puzzles appear much earlier.
Should I teach my child the way I learned it?
Ask to see how their teacher shows it first. The maths is the same, but a second method can confuse a child who is still learning the first. Use your own way only if theirs has clearly not stuck.
How long should we practise each night?
Ten to twenty focused minutes usually does more than an hour. Stop while it is going well rather than after an argument.
Is it normal to struggle with algebra?
Yes. It is the first time maths asks a child to reason about an unknown number, and most children find that jump hard at first. Struggling with one topic is normal; struggling with everything usually points to an earlier gap.
