Word problems help for kids: is it the reading or the maths?

A child who gets every plain arithmetic question right can still freeze the moment the same question is wrapped in a sentence. That is not a sign the maths itself is too hard — it usually means the trouble is in a different step: turning a story into a calculation in the first place. This guide is about finding which of those two skills is actually missing, rather than assuming it is the maths.

4 things you can do at home

  1. Cover the numbers and ask what is happening

    Hide the numbers in a word problem with your hand and ask your child to explain the situation in their own words: who has what, and what changes. A child who can retell the story but not solve it has a maths gap; one who cannot retell it has a reading gap.

  2. Ask for the operation before the answer

    Before any calculating, ask "are we adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing here, and how do you know?" Answering that question out loud is the actual skill word problems test, and it catches a wrong plan before it turns into a wrong answer.

  3. Circle the question, then the numbers

    Have your child physically circle the question sentence first, then underline only the numbers they will need. Problems often include one number that is not needed at all, and a child who has not been taught to expect that will try to use every number they see.

  4. Check the answer against the story, not just the sum

    Once there is an answer, ask "does that make sense for what was happening?" A total that comes out smaller than a starting amount, or an answer with a decimal point for a question about whole people, is a sign to recheck the operation rather than the arithmetic.

  1. Why a child who is fine with plain sums still struggles

    A bare calculation like 24 ÷ 3 tells a child exactly what to do. A word problem does not — it describes a situation, and the child has to work out which operation the situation calls for before any calculating starts. That translation step is a separate skill from arithmetic, closer to reading comprehension than to maths, and it is the step that is usually missing when a child "can do the maths but not the word problems".

    It is also why word problems often surface earlier than a family expects: a child can be genuinely strong at times tables or column addition and still be undone by a two-line story, because fluency with numbers does not automatically include fluency with turning sentences into numbers.

  2. The words that hide the operation

    Certain words get taught as shortcuts for an operation — "altogether" means add, "left" means subtract, "each" means multiply — and that shortcut works often enough that children lean on it instead of reading the problem. It also fails often enough to cause real trouble: "How many are left after sharing 12 sweets between 3 children?" uses "left", but the operation is division, not subtraction.

    The fix is not a longer list of keywords to memorise. It is asking your child to describe the situation first (see the steps above), so the operation comes from what is actually happening rather than from spotting a trigger word in the sentence.

  3. A worked example: a two-step problem

    "Sam has 3 bags with 8 marbles in each. He gives 5 marbles to his sister. How many marbles does Sam have now?" Read plainly, the pull is to grab the numbers 3, 8 and 5 and combine them somehow. Read for the story, there are two separate events: first, how many marbles Sam starts with (3 bags of 8 is multiplication: 3 × 8 = 24), then what happens to that total (giving some away is subtraction: 24 − 5 = 19).

    Most word-problem errors on a question like this are not arithmetic mistakes in 3 × 8 or 24 − 5 on their own — they are picking only one of the two steps, or the wrong operation for one of them. Walking through "what happens first, what happens next" out loud is what catches that, well before the final subtraction is even reached.

  4. Why this gap follows a child into algebra

    Word problems do not stop at primary school — they turn into algebra word problems, where a sentence like "a number, plus 7, is 15" has to become x + 7 = 15 before it can be solved. That is the exact same translation skill, sentence into number sentence, just with a letter standing in for the missing amount instead of a question mark.

    A child who never became comfortable translating a story into a calculation will hit the same wall again in algebra, usually described as "I understand the equations, I just can’t set them up". Fixing the translation step now, on problems with numbers rather than letters, is time that pays off again later rather than only once.

  • Gets the right answer once you tell them which operation to use, but cannot decide on their own.
  • Grabs every number in the problem and combines them, whether or not each one is needed.
  • Can retell the story in their own words but still cannot say what calculation it needs.
  • Relies on keyword spotting ("altogether" means add) and gets caught out when it fails.
  • Skips straight to calculating without reading the question sentence properly.
  • Multi-step problems consistently lose the second step, even when each step alone is easy.

My child can do the arithmetic but not the word problem. Is that a maths gap?

Usually not the arithmetic itself — it is the step of deciding which operation the story calls for. Check that specifically, separately from asking them to calculate, before assuming more sums practice is the fix.

Should I teach keyword tricks like "altogether means add"?

Use them sparingly, if at all. They work often enough to feel reliable and fail often enough to cause real errors. Asking your child to explain what is happening in the story is a more dependable habit than spotting a trigger word.

What age do word problems usually start causing trouble?

They can trip up a child at any age, but two-step word problems (US Grades 3–4, ages 8–10) are a common point where the reading demand catches up with the calculation for the first time.

Is drawing a picture a real strategy, or just for younger kids?

It is a real strategy at any age. A quick sketch of what is happening in a problem often reveals the correct operation faster than reading the sentence again, and plenty of older students use it on harder, multi-step problems too.
